Renewable energies, electromobility, mobile communications and aerospace - without electrical engineering, there would be no way to utilise and control these technologies. The challenges of the future in particular, such as the energy transition, digitalisation and sustainable mobility, make this discipline essential for modern life. The practice-oriented Bachelor's degree programme in Electrical Engineering (BEng) prepares students for a career with a secure future.

Programme content

The area of application of electrical engineering ranges from developing electronic components for recording process variables and actuator technology to microprocessors and SPS control systems through to the implementation of networked process control systems. Here, engineers are needed from a very wide range of specialist fields, such as electronics, circuit, control, regulation and digital technology or information technology.

During the first two semesters, students acquire the necessary basic knowledge in mathematics and physics. They learn how electrical components function and how circuits are used. Alongside the basic course of study, students learn about computer science and are taught the important fundamental knowledge needed by engineers.

At the start of the third semester, they choose the area on which they would like to focus. Students can select from automation technology or electronic systems. In the third and fourth semesters, they also learn about microprocessors and circuit development. In the fifth semester, students are given the experience of everyday working life in a company during a practical semester lasting at least 20 weeks. Alternatively, they can complete a semester abroad.

In the subsequent focus year (the sixth and seventh semester), students intensify their application-related project work and acquire further key qualifications. The programme ends with a practice-oriented bachelor thesis and a colloquium, after which graduates are awarded the title “Bachelor of Engineering” (BEng).

Sustainability during studies: “Blaue Schiene”

The challenge that engineers face is to find innovative solutions for future problem areas. The Blauen Schiene is a module in which aspects of sustainability are taught. From the second semester onwards, teaching events are offered during different semesters with topics ranging from renewable energies, e-mobility and energy harvesting to energy management in IT systems and sustainable product development.

Practical orientation

A key element of an engineering degree programme at the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is applying what is learned in practice and using a solution-oriented approach:

  • for example in practical laboratory work, in which physical principles are tested and materials are studied
  • during the three project weeks during every semester, which each take place in alternation with four lecture weeks, and which offer an opportunity of working through projects in small teams (Four-One-Model).
  • during a practical seminar in Germany or abroad, when students gain their first work experience as engineers in training
  • when writing your thesis, which can be completed in cooperation with businesses or research institutes

Required language skills

All courses are held in German.

Prospects and job prospects

When overall control of rail and road networks is required, and logistics need to be managed at airports, automation technology is used. Digital and electronic systems ensure safe, efficient driving in vehicles and enable the use of electric drives with high levels of efficiency. Every production company, be it in the plant or car industry or in the chemical industry, is now largely automated. This also applies to plants generating or distributing energy, such as wind farms or transformer stations, as well as water supply and wastewater disposal plants. In these, and in many other areas, you will be in demand as a graduate of our bachelor’s degree programme in Electrical Engineering (BEng).

The Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences offers two suitable master programmes that build on the bachelor programme: Electrical Engineering (MEng) focusing on electronic system development, and Mechanical Engineering (MEng) focusing on mechatronics or virtual product development.

Location

The Sankt Augustin campus is located in NRW and is easy to reach by public transport from Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf or Koblenz.

Prerequisites

Formal requirements for admission are either the “Fachhochschulreife” or an “Allgemeine Hochschulreife” higher-level secondary school-leaving qualification, a corresponding vocational qualification, or previous education that is regarded as being of equivalent value.

The degree programme is free of admission. You can enrol for the winter semester between 1 June and 1 October.
