Research fields

The topics of energy efficiency and renewable energies deal with the modelling and optimization of renewable energy systems. The weather-related fluctuations in renewable energy generation and the sector-specific requirements for the form, quantity and variability of the energy provided require a better understanding of the dynamics of cross-sectoral energy networks with integrated storage systems. The research field therefore deals with both energy meteorological issues and the investigation of energy cycles, which can range from a household to supra-regional grids.

In the research field of modeling and simulation, many application examples from the other TREE research groups are processed cross-sectionally. At the same time, there is a strong focus on independent method development in order to be able to process and solve the latest technical problems with computer support at all times. This naturally results in close cooperation between natural and engineering scientists and between experimentalists and simulators from the various fields of research.

The majority of all plastics are made from crude oil, natural gas or coal. In order to replace these fossil resources with renewable raw materials (grasses, wood, waste), new materials are being developed in various research projects. For example, lignin obtained from plants could replace conventional petroleum-based polymers in the future.

In the research field of technology communication and acceptance, technology solutions for social and ecological challenges are reflected against the background of their social, ecological and economic effects.
