Further ESD study programmes at H-BRS

We see the teaching at our university as committed to the goal of education for sustainable development (ESD) in accordance with the UNESCO World Action Program 2030. We take on this multi-layered and interdisciplinary task and enable our graduates to design sustainable processes and to act responsibly and reflectively. With this in mind, we see the imparting of specialist knowledge and competencies as a self-evident task of our education at the H-BRS, which permeates all (specialist) areas.

The Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) promote student engagement in the areas of sustainability and social responsibility. There are a variety of ways to get involved in sustainability at the university.

Sustainable Social Policy (B.A.)

a degree program of the Department of Social Policy and Social Security.

Growing poverty, unequal education opportunities and social injustice. Germany needs someone to tackle these problems and who does more than just talk about them. Someone who will also be important for future generations. If you want to take a critical look at our social system, analyse problems, develop ideas to solve them and communicate with the right target group via the media, then the bachelor’s degree programme in Sustainable Social Policy (B.A.) is exactly right for you.

2+2-programme Business Administration (B.A.)

a cooperative study programme of the Department of Economics in cooperation with the Chinese Hunan University.
In the 2+2 Business Administration programme, students earn a double degree within four years: First they study for two years at Hunan University, followed by two years of study at Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

a degree programme of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism.
This degree programme combines mechanical and electrical engineering with aspects of sustainability and allows students to focus on renewable energies, energy efficiency and environmental engineering.

International Media Studies (M.A.)

a study programme of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism in cooperation with Deutsche Welle and the University of Bonn.

The English-language, postgraduate Master's programme is aimed at international professionals. It imparts academic, interdisciplinary and intercultural core competencies in the management of NGOs and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in a practice-oriented manner.

Electrotechnical Systems Development for Agriculture (M.Eng.)

a study program of the Department of Engineering and Communication (IWK) in cooperation with the University of Bonn and the Universidad National de San Luis, Argentina (Prof. Valenzuela, FB 03).

In the bi-national Master's programme of the Universidad Nacional de San Luis (UNSL) in Argentina and the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS), engineers learn how methods and techniques of electrical engineering can be used in agricultural science.

a degree programme of the Department of Applied Natural Sciences.
The degree programme is located in the field of materials science and technical sustainability. It imparts methodological competences in the field of material development, material processing and material analytics as well as in the field of sustainability aspects such as more efficient materials, life cycle assessment, holistic balancing, resource conservation and renewable raw materials.

The Language Centre's sustainability-related offer:

At the simulated "Trade Fair", students from Departments 01 (Stankt Augustin and Rheinbach) and 02 took part in a simulated English-language trade fair with a focus on sustainability as part of their Business English course. The topic "sustainability" was included in the curriculum in 2011 so that students could familiarise themselves in English with specific topics such as corporate governance, environmental footprint and life cycle assessment.

The Certificate in Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility at Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

With the study programme Responsibility, the Centre for Ethics and Responsibility (ZEV) in cooperation with the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) offers all students at Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences the opportunity to deal with current social, economic, ecological, technological and digital change processes in a practical and application-oriented manner.

The Responsibility degree programme is completed with a sustainability certificate.

IZNE Working Paper Series

With the Working Paper Series, IZNE gives students and researchers the opportunity to publish their theses and dissertations. Within the framework of the Working Paper Series, the IZNE would like to publish the best research papers by students and researchers with a connection to sustainable development.

The selected dissertations will then be accessible via 'opus vier', the library's publication database. The series started in 2016 with a topic on corporate mobility management in the city of Bonn.

IZNE Sustainability Award for Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility

The prize has been suspended since 2019 and is therefore no longer awarded at present. From 2011 to 2018, the IZNE awarded an annual prize for an outstanding academic thesis or dissertation by students at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences on the topic of sustainability and responsibility. The prize was endowed with 1,000 euros and was aimed at students from all faculties.
