Best Diversity Paper Award for Conference-Paper
At the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon, the Multidisciplinary Engineering Division (MULTI) awarded the Best Diversity Paper Award to a conference contribution from the research collaboration between ZIEL at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences, and the Engineering and Computing Education Program (ECEP) in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The ASEE was founded in the USA in 1893, making it one of the oldest professional societies for the promotion of university-related engineering education. The Best Paper Awards are only presented based on nominations by the peer reviewers; it is not possible for authors to apply.
Dr. Jamie Gurganus (UMBC), primary author, accepted the award for her winning paper “Development and Impact of Research Efficacy in an Undergraduate Teaching-Assistant Certification Class” from Program Chairs Prof. Dr. Duncan Davis (Northeastern University College of Engineering) and Prof. Dr. Cynthia Barnicki (Milwaukee School of Engineering) on June 24 on behalf of co-author Michael Malschützky (H-BRS).
The award-winning paper focused on an empirical investigation into the impact of a university didactics certification program for student teaching assistants at UMBC on their research-related self-efficacy. Developed by Dr. Gurganus and endorsed by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), this program engages bachelor's students in a comprehensive two-semester certification in higher education didactics. During this time, they develop, implement, and empirically research their own teaching units.
