Sustainability Science meets Development Studies: How can synergies between both research programmes be strengthened?

Sustainability Science and Development Studies have several common intersections. They are rooted in a broad range of disciplines and the research is often inter- and transdisciplinary. Development Studies is more rooted in the social sciences and Sustainability Science in the natural and technical sciences. However, both approaches not only have similar research topics in certain areas, but also face similar definitional problems. For example, how to define their eponymous terms sustainability and development?
The interactive workshop "Sustainability Science meets Development Studies: How can synergies between both research programmes be strengthened?", which is taking place as part of the Sustainability Science Summit 2025, is organised by Prof. Dr. Katja Bender and Dr. Sebastian Heinen (both IZNE) and Susanne von Itter (EADI). The workshop aims to bring together representatives of Sustainability Science and Development Studies in order to provide a better understanding of common and complementary research interests and methods and to promote opportunities to strengthen collaboration at the individual and institutional levels.

„By bringing Sustainability Science and Development Studies into conversation, we can create a more holistic understanding of sustainable development that is both socially just and ecologically sound.”
Prof. Dr. Katja Bender - Professor of Economics, esp. Economic & Social Development, Director of the International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE)

„Sustainability Science and Development Studies ultimately have compatible goals: making the world more sustainable and developing certain regions of the world sustainably. Joint research and implementation projects could therefore be very fruitful, but hardly ever take place. We hope that our session contributes to a better mutual understanding and potential ideas for cooperation.”
Dr. Sebastian Heinen - Research Fellow Economic Development, International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE)
