Erasmus Outgoing
Students can receive Erasmus+ funding for up to 12 months for both their Bachelor's and Master's degree. A combination of several Erasmus+ stays (e.g. study and internship) is possible. The actual duration of the stay, which may exceed the financially supported duration, is taken into account. Stays already completed must be documented in the "Grant Agreement" (Erasmus+ Agreement). Furthermore, internships within one year after completion of a study phase (graduate internships) are possible if the application was made within the last year of the study phase.
The 33 countries eligible for the ERASMUS+ mobility programme are the 27 Member States of the European Union, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.
Study Abroad or Internship with Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ Study Abroad (SMS)
With Erasmus+, students can study at a European partner university in another participating country for a minimum period of 90 days after four semesters in the Bachelor's or two semesters in the Master's programme in order to expand their social and cultural skills and improve their career prospects. They get to know the academic system of a foreign university as well as its teaching and learning methods.

- Not having to pay tuition fees at the host university
- Support during the planning phase and the application process
- Possibility to complete a language course online
- Special fundings rates for students with children, students with disability and for students with chronic diseases, working students, students from a non-academic background (see below)

Erasmus+ Internships Abroad (SMP)
Students can use Erasmus+ to complete traineeships in companies or universities (not partner universities) of a European Member State outside Germany for a period of at least 60 days. EU institutions and other EU organisations, including specialised agencies, as well as organisations managing EU programmes (e.g. National Agencies) are not eligible for Erasmus+ placements.
Advantages of an Erasmus+ internship abroad
- Support throughout the internship by one contact person at the home university as well as one contact person at the company
- Support during the planning phase
- Special fundings rates for students with children, students with disability and for students with chronic diseases, working students, students from a non-academic background (see below)
- Special funding rates for Green Travel (see below)
Formal requirements
- Regular immatriculation at a German university
- No funding available for internships at EU institutions and other EU facilities including specialized acengies (complete list here)
Funding rates - Internship abroad (SMP)
According to the rules of the contract, the funding is calculated on a daily basis, a uniform funding period applies and funding rates are set according to country groups. The funding period depends on the available scholarship funds and is specified in the funding contract between the student and the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.
The funding rates for an Erasmus+ internship have increased for the winter semester 2022/23. The monthly funding is based on the different cost of living in the destination countries:
- Group 1 (monthly 750 euros): Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden
- Group 2 (monthly 690 euros): Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain
- Group 3 (monthly 640 euros): Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Northern Macedonia, Turkey.
Starting with the winter semester 2022/23, an additional "green travel" grant of 50 euros can be applied for if the outward and return journeys to and from the destination country are made using low-emission means of transport.
Please note: in the case of two-month internships, especially for the month of February, please ensure that your stay abroad is for a minimum of 60 days!
Social Top Ups
The target groups for Erasmus social top ups are expanded for internships abroad from the academic year 2022/23, and for study stays at Erasmus partner universities from the academic year 2023/24. In this way, students for whom a stay abroad may be more challenging are especially supported in their endeavors.
In addition to students with disabilities or chronic illnesses and students with children, other groups will be eligible for a monthly top up of 250 euros under certain conditions in the future: working students and students from a non-academic background.
Provided there are sufficient resources, the funding will be paid for the entire period of stay.
There is also the possibility for all students to receive a grant of 50-200 euros in case you decide to travel sustainably ("Green Travel"). For this, the route to and from the partner university or company must be by low-emission means of transport. You can find more information about this under following link:
Combinability of the additional fundings
The "Social Top Up" can - even if several criteria are met - only be obtained once with 250 euros/month for the subsidized period. A combination of Social Top Up and Green Travel, however, is possible. Your Erasmus funding can therefore consist of the following components:
Maximum funding = Regular monthly rate for your country + if applicable, top-up of 250 euros/month as "Social Top Up" + if applicable, one-time funding for sustainable travel.
Application and supporting documents
The application for the additional funding is done in two steps:
1. Entry in the application portal Mobility Online after the internal place confirmation (studies) or receipt of the required documents upon request from Astrid Schlinkert (internship).
2. Submission of the original signed declaration of honor when handing in the grant agreement.
With your application for one of the Top Ups, you agree to keep the original proof of eligibility for five years (depending on the additional funding, e.g. medical certificate, disability certificate, travel receipts, parents' statement, salary slips) and to submit it to the International Office of Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences upon request.
Students with disabilities
Eligibility: A degree of disability of at least 20 or a proven disability due to which there is an additional financial need
Evidence: Honorary declaration "Additional funding" and submission of receipts on request.
Note: If particularly high additional costs arise due to your stay abroad, a so-called "real cost application" can be submitted instead with a few months' notice, through which up to 15,000 euros per semester can be covered, e.g. for an accompanying person. It is also possible to receive a contribution for a preparatory trip to explore the local conditions. This requires a great deal of time in advance, so we ask you to seek advice on this at an early stage.
Students with additional needs due to chronic illness
Eligibility: A chronic illness that leads to additional financial needs for the stay abroad.
Evidence: Honorary declaration "Additional funding" and submission of receipts upon request.
This requires a great deal of time in advance, so we ask you to seek advice on this in good time.
Students with children
Eligibility: One or more children must be taken abroad for the entire duration of the stay. The subsidy applies once per family and is also possible if a caregiver, e.g. partner, travels along.
Evidence: Honorary declaration " Additional funding" and submission of receipts on request.
Note: If particularly high additional costs are caused by taking your child/children along for your stay abroad, a so-called "real cost application" can be submitted instead with a few months' notice, through which up to 15,000 euros per semester can be covered. It is also possible to receive a contribution for a preparatory trip to explore the local conditions. This requires a lot of time in advance, so we ask you to seek advice on this in good time.
Students from a non-academic background
Studies have shown that students whose parents have not already been to university themselves are less likely to consider a stay abroad. With additional funding, the Erasmus programme would like to encourage these students to take the step abroad.
Eligibility: Parents or caregivers without a university or technical college degree or a master craftsman's diploma. A degree from a university-like professional academy counts as an academic degree. Likewise, courses of study completed abroad by a parent count as an academic degree, even if they are not recognized in Germany.
Evidence: Honorary declaration "Additional funding" and submission of supporting documents on request.
Working students
Students who earn a significant amount of their own living may be reluctant to study abroad because they often cannot continue working while abroad and the earnings are lost.
Eligibility:
- Employment with net earnings above 450 euros and below 850 euros in each month consistently for at least six months during the two semesters preceding the study abroad. In the case of monthly fluctuating earnings, the top up can be awarded if the earnings averaged over six continuous months result in monthly earnings above 450 EUR and below 850 EUR.
- The employment must have taken place for a stay abroad in/from the winter semester from 01.08. of the previous year to 31.07. of the year abroad or for a stay abroad in the summer semester from 01.02. of the previous year to 31.01. of the year abroad
- The employment may be a single one or several immediately following each other (an interruption during the regular vacation period during the employment is not a problem)
- The activity is not continued during the stay abroad (this includes mobile work, paid leave, etc.), so there is a loss of earnings
- Generally excluded are jobs performed on a self-employed basis and dual/part-time study programs with a fixed salary
Evidence: Honorary declaration "additional support" and submission of supporting documents on request
