VDI-Award Ceremony: First place for Jannik Brockerhoff
On 19.01.2022, Jannik Brockerhoff, research assistant in the "Games Technology Network (GTN)" project at the H-BRS, was awarded 1st prize at the VDI sponsorship award ceremony for his Bachelor's thesis on "Enhancing immersion in virtual reality by developing an inertial feedback system". The VDI Cologne district association awarded the prize as part of the annual Tec.Meet.Ing event for outstanding final theses from the technical faculties in the association's area. Brockerhoff can look forward to prize money of €2,000 and one year's free membership of the VDI.
In his work, Brockerhoff developed a hardware system with mass flywheels that can generate inertia on the legs. The system is intended to enhance immersion in virtual reality (VR). When you walk through water, you feel resistance on your legs. Brockerhoff is developing a technology in which the user also feels resistance when walking through "virtual waters", for example, because the system makes the movement more sluggish.
With his work, Brockerhoff provides another building block for further development in the field of human computer interaction.
