Curriculum vitae

Ulrich Kelber has been the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information since January 2019.
He was a member of the Bundestag from September 2000 to January 2019 and represented his home city of Bonn as a directly elected member of parliament. He was born in 1968, is married and has five children.
After completing his studies, the computer science graduate first worked at the Information Technology Research Centre and then as a knowledge management consultant at a software company.
From 2005 to 2013, he was Deputy Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the German Bundestag and coordinated the policy areas of consumer protection, food, agriculture, environment, nature conservation, reactor safety and sustainability.
From December 2013 to April 2018, he was Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, specialising in consumer protection.

Projects

Member of the Data Ethics Commission, which has been commissioned by the German government to develop ethical guidelines for the protection of the individual, the preservation of social coexistence and the safeguarding and promotion of prosperity in the information age by autumn 2019.
