H-BRS scores highly in the MIWF's analysis grid

Friday 22 July 2016

The NRW Ministry of Science today published an online comparison of the performance of state universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Departments of Computer Science and Natural Sciences at H-BRS clearly score highly in terms of research success. This is based on successful applications for public funding programmes, for example from the Federal Ministry of Research, the State Ministry of Science or the EU.

Due to the strong growth of the H-BRS in recent years, the capacity utilisation of many degree programmes at the university is around 140 per cent, with the Management Sciences department leading the way with 160 per cent capacity utilisation.

According to the Ministry of Science, the analysis grid is intended to provide information on how much a university is utilising its capacity, how many external funds it is attracting and in which subjects it is a leader in teaching in North Rhine-Westphalia

Prof. Dr Reiner Clement, Vice President of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, is cautious: "The data is extremely interesting. But you have to bear in mind that it is primarily a quantitative analysis which, if you take teaching success, says nothing about quality."

The universities' teaching units listed in the analysis grid are also not necessarily congruent, making it almost impossible to make a real comparison between the universities. "We want to improve and - perhaps apart from the success of the programme - we don't measure this against the other universities, but against the development of our own figures."

The analysis grid can be viewed online.
