Application and service contract

Applications for the employment of student and research assistants are submitted by the supervisor or the academic supervisor and confirmed by the dean of the relevant department or the head of the relevant academic institution with an additional signature.

An employment relationship as a student or research assistant is established exclusively by a written employment contract, which is drawn up by the staff in the Human Resources and Legal Affairs Department on behalf of the President. Contracts are generally drawn up for a minimum term of one year. The maximum period of employment is limited to a total of six years. It is not permitted to take up employment without a valid employment contract or before signing the contract.

Student assistants are assistants without a university degree or those who have not yet obtained a professional university degree in the subject assigned to their assistantship. Employment as a student assistant is possible if the person to be employed is enrolled at a German university for a degree programme leading to a first professional qualification.

After the Bachelor's degree, employment is only possible as a research assistant and is subject to co-determination by the academic staff council in accordance with Section 72 (1) No. 1 LPVG.

The processing time for applications with complete documentation is up to three weeks for student assistants and tutors and up to five weeks for research assistants.
