Required courses in English

English is a required course in most of the university’s German-language Bachelor's degree programmes as well as in some Master's degree programmes. These courses do not focus on general English but rather on the technical language of the respective degree programmes or academic disciplines. A good command of the English language (i.e. at least on the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is therefore a prerequisite. For some degree programmes, we even require language skills on the B2 level.

Placement testing

At the beginning of their studies, all students are tested by the Language Centre. This placement test allows us to put students into groups according to their level of English. If you would like to find out your level prior to taking the placement test, you can use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to assess your language skills or use one of the many tests available on the Internet (see our FAQ for further information). Please note that your self-assessment or an online test does not exempt you from taking the compulsory placement test which is centrally carried out by the Language Centre at the beginning of the semester.

Further English courses

In some departments, students whose English skills are below level B1 must attend compulsory preparatory courses before they are admitted to the compulsory courses; you will receive further information about this during the orientation weeks or together with the English placement test.

Moreover, the Language Centre offers general English courses as intensive courses during the semester break and as semester-long courses.
