Gas network modeling
Throughout the entire hydrogen cycle, sensor data can be collected and processed using Big Data & Energy 4.0. Experiments can thus be scaled to entire energy networks. The modeling and simulation of gas networks in the transmission, distribution and transport sector (natural gas, synthesis gas, H2 qualities) is carried out with the MYNTS simulator of the partner Fraunhofer SCAI.
Production & use of green hydrogen
The efficient production and use of green hydrogen is another focus of H-BRS. Activities here concentrate on researching and demonstrating efficient and reliable converter solutions for electrolysis and fuel cells, among other things. New solution approaches are being pursued that integrate new semiconductor technologies on the one hand and provide system services on the other.
Hydrogen storage
H2 storage is particularly important because the generation of renewable energy, such as via wind turbines or PV systems, is subject to seasonal and weather-related fluctuations. In this context, research projects are developing technologically advanced solutions for optimal dimensioning, prediction-based system control of transportation and H2 storage.
Complementary fields of research
Hydrogen research at H-BRS is rounded off by the complementary research fields of life cycle assessment and sustainability analysis of H2 systems, technology acceptance as well as potential and regional climate data analysis. Regional scenarios can thus be simulated for the integration of decentralized H2 generation and storage on the one hand and H2 consumption on the other in gas networks of the future. From a social science perspective, the interplay between the adaptation and diffusion of technological innovations and the change in social structures and institutions is also being investigated.
