Professor Uhde retires from the Department of Computer Science

Her scientific career began in southern Lower Saxony: after primary school in Schladen and secondary school in Wolfenbüttel, she studied electrical engineering at the TU Braunschweig, specialising in high-frequency technology. She completed her doctorate at the Institute for High Frequency Technology at the TU Hamburg-Harburg. She then worked in industry, including in the Philips application laboratory, the Microelectronics Application Centre and at HanseNet (now Alice).
She was appointed to Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg on 1 August 1998 - a period of time that she herself comments with a smile as ‘Wow, that was a long time ago ...’. In the early years, she was not only active in teaching, but also helped to establish the Department of Computer Science. Under the first Dean, Prof Dr Wiesner, and the founding Rector, Prof Dr Severin, she was involved in the development of the curriculum.

The laboratory network introduced together with Prof Leischner was a particular novelty: By merging their two laboratories, an efficient concept was created in which one laboratory was used for exercises and practicals in teaching, while the other provided space for final theses and investigations. This structure has proven to be extremely practical and still exists today.
Her commitment to the students was consistently characterised by a deep connection to teaching. She took on important courses, particularly in the undergraduate programme - a task that is demanding and not always popular, as the basic subjects, especially in the first semester, pose particular challenges. But that is precisely what made her so committed: Initially, she held the lecture ‘Networks’ (or its predecessor ‘Data Transmission and Protocols’) in the summer semester. From the 2016 winter semester, she also took on exercises on Computer Engineering and from the 2017 winter semester, she and her colleague Prof Breuer took on the lecture and exercise groups on ‘Physical Foundations and Computer Engineering’. A small ‘thank you’ to the department, as she herself describes it.

Friends, family, alumni and colleagues honoured her decades of commitment at a farewell ceremony. She was particularly pleased that her long-time companion, Prof Leischner, who is now retired himself, was present. He expressed his sincere thanks for the many years of collegial and always excellent collaboration.
The Dean of the Faculty thanked Uhde for her life's work and emphasised her lasting influence on teaching and research at the university.
All the best for the new phase of your life!
