Professor Teena Chakkalayil Hassan and Professor Anna-Lena Menn took up their first transfer professorships in the winter semester 2024/25. Their aim is to strengthen regional development through research, knowledge transfer and networking. To further expand regional innovation ecosystems, Professor Martin Sieber's transfer professorship will continue for three semesters.

In addition to the university's knowledge transfer with industry and society, the transfer professorship provides important impetus for the respective areas of innovation. “By establishing the transfer professorships, we are also sharpening the university's transfer and innovation profile in the regional ecosystem and alliance network,” says Professor Michaela Wirtz, Vice President for Transfer, Innovation and Sustainability. Wirtz played a key role in the expansion of the transfer professorships and led this year's award procedure.

Professor Hassan has been appointed for the period from 1 October 2024 to 28 February 2026. Her research focuses on social interactions between humans and robots, particularly in the areas of health, care, Industry 5.0 and autonomous driving. “The aim of this call is to support the establishment of the transfer professorship in the field of digitalization and sustainability in regional innovation ecosystems in the Rhein-Sieg district. In particular, the focus is on transferring the use of digital-based technology, such as AI and robotics, in connection with social and socially relevant sustainability,” explains Hassan. She offers elective modules on artificial intelligence and robotics and sensitizes students to the ethical aspects of these technologies. Her aim is to create new economic partnerships through close cooperation with business and society in the Rhein-Sieg district and to develop application-oriented solutions in real-world laboratories.

Professor Menn will take up her transfer professorship from 1 October 2024 to 28 February 2026 and head the research field “Modeling and Simulation” at TREE. Her focus is on promoting sustainability transformation, particularly in the field of engineering. She plans to strengthen the university's visibility in the research and transfer landscape and establish the “Sustainable Engineering” course as a model for sustainable teaching. Her goals also include networking research activities and initiating funding programs for sustainable developments in the energy transition. “As Transfer Professor of Sustainability and Alliances at H-BRS, I would like to actively shape and drive forward the sustainability transformation and the associated research and transfer activities,” emphasizes Menn.

Professor Sieber will continue his transfer professorship in the field of “Clinical Research” for the period from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2026.

During his first transfer professorship from October 2021, Sieber combined research results from the life sciences with the development of regional innovation ecosystems with a focus on the bioeconomy. Building on this, he now wants to realize start-up ecosystems and identify and evaluate conditions for successful transfer. Sieber also wants to develop a concept for further vocational training at the H-BRS. This should be an important transfer element in connection with “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)”. The development of networks and cooperation with regional and supra-regional partners will play a central role in this. “The integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at universities is crucial for shaping a more sustainable future. ESD is a central topic that encompasses research, teaching and transfer,” says Sieber.

Professors at H-BRS who have excelled in the area of transfer can apply for a transfer professorship with a specific transfer concept. In order to implement the transfer concept, the teaching load can be reduced by up to 50 percent for a maximum of five years. The current appointments and the extension were approved by the university management at the Executive Board meetings in July and October 2024.
