On Wednesday, 6 November 2024, Prof. Dr Hektor Haarkötter and Dr Patrick Baues organised an interdisciplinary event between communication, economics and political science on the US presidential elections and invited students to analyse the results together.

Under the title ‘Special on the US Election 2024’, students from the third and fifth semesters of the Bachelor's degree programme in Sustainable Social Policy came together for an exciting exchange on the election results and their significance.

The questions that characterised the morning were as explosive as they were topical: How did Trump manage to become President of the United States again? What were the driving factors behind his election victory? What weaknesses and mistakes characterised the campaign of Kamala Harris and the Democrats? The consequences of the election for Germany and Europe were also discussed. The students had the opportunity to present their own analyses and develop them further by exchanging ideas with the experts.

A particular highlight was the contribution by Prof. Dr Ralf Meyer from the Department of Economics, who shared his comprehensive impressions and analyses from the USA with the audience. His experiences and assessments offered a well-founded insight into the economic and social dynamics that may have made Trump's election success possible.

The event offered all participants a valuable platform to reflect on the political, social and economic consequences of the election and to sharpen their analytical skills in a realistic environment. The exchange between students and lecturers impressively demonstrated how interdisciplinary perspectives can contribute to an in-depth examination of current political issues.
