A day for interdisciplinary, knowledge-oriented research: On Friday, 27 September, the first research retreat of the DFG-funded research network "CytoTransport - Mechanisms and Modulation of Cellular Transport Processes", which was launched in April, took place at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg.

Professor Mike Althaus, spokesperson for the research network, welcomed around 50 guests to the Sankt Augustin campus. In three sessions on the topics of "Cellular transport processes", "Bio-inspired nanomaterials" and "In silico modelling and method development", nine young scientists and three postdocs presented their research projects and the insights they have already gained. "The quality of the presentations was impressive and the vigour with which the new employees started their projects was clearly noticeable," said Althaus.

Three keynote speakers

The day was also enriched by the three keynote speakers Professor Stine H.F. Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen, Professor Ralf Hausmann from RWTH Aachen University and Professor Robert Woods from the University of Georgia, who reported on their research in exciting presentations.

Elementary to the day was the promotion of young scientists. The presentation sessions were led by doctoral students, who were motivated and self-confident throughout the programme and were able to gain valuable experience for future conferences in addition to their own presentations. Sarah Shoushrah, Karen Luján López and Rene Lawong were also particularly impressive with their presentations and were presented with an "Early Career Best Presentation Award" by Professor Remi Maier-Rigaud, Vice President Research and Junior Academics. "Particularly in the early stages of research qualification, professional exchange is of fundamental importance. I am very confident that the network will achieve many important research findings in the coming years," said Vice President Remi Maier-Rigaud.

"This was a successful day focusing on research," summarised Professor Mike Althaus. "We look forward to the further work of the network and exciting projects."

One of ten DFG "research impulses" nationwide

The "CytoTransport" research network is one of ten collaborative projects funded nationwide in the DFG's new "Forschungsimpulse" programme for universities of applied sciences. H-BRS will receive around six million euros over the next five years as part of this funding programme.
