From the Remote Lab to the new E-race car - Formula Student presents itself at Yarmouk University (Jordan)

Friday 27 January 2023

As an expert in transfer projects with Jordanian universities, Prof. Dr. Rainer Herpers from the Department of Computer Science at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) was able to win over colleagues from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism (EMT) for the DAAD project "YURL - Remote Lab at Yarmouk University" in 2021, in order to set up the technical equipment for teaching there within the framework of remote labs and, above all, to convey the technical and didactic know-how of the EMT colleagues to the Jordanian project partners.

To conclude the YURL project and as part of the dissemination event, two workshops with lecturers from the H-BRS took place at Yarmouk University (YU) in Irbid in December 2022, which attracted a great deal of interest from Jordanian students.

In a two-day workshop, Master's students Jan Behrendt and Daniel Roethgen, together with Prof. Dirk Reith, introduced "Formula Student" to Jordanian engineering students and took them along in their workshop to vividly link the work in "mathlab" with the requirements from the "Formula Student" project. Last but not least, this link between motorsport and the student project "Formula Student" ensured that the lecturers for the practical workshop work in "mathlab" had a well-attended workshop on both days.

Workshop by Andrea Schwandt (H-BRS) on "Programming FPGAs"

The second workshop was offered by Andrea Schwandt on the topic of "Programming FPGAs". Here, too, the seminar room was well attended by students of computer science. Ms Schwandt and her Jordanian colleague Doaa M. Yousef Aloquel skilfully introduced the topic to the students and thus certainly encouraged them to deepen what they had learned there in the following months by using it in the Remote Lab.

The technical facilities for teaching could be put into operation in the course of this project with the help of Remote Labs. Here, too, Schwandt, who had already introduced remote labs as a didactic addition to the teaching formats at the H-BRS long before Corona, had a key position, as she was able to successfully clear the technical and administrative obstacles in setting up and commissioning the remote lab on site. In the future, courses can now also take place at YU as Remote Labs, so that further interesting teaching and learning opportunities can be opened up for teachers and students there.

In the context of this dissemination event, the project results achieved were also presented to and discussed with previously uninvolved colleagues from Yarmouk University. It is particularly pleasing that within the framework of an Erasmus+ project that will start soon, the Remote Lab in particular can be continued in the support of qualification in engineering education and extended to other universities beyond Jordan.

The project funded by the DAAD as part of the "German-Arab Transformation Partnership - German-Arab University Partnerships" was brought to a successful conclusion not least with this trip.
