Children's university in the Rhine-Sieg district with five events starting in September

Kinderuni Rhein-Sieg 2023/24

Tuesday 29 August 2023

Film production, coffee roasting, fighting poverty: the ninth edition of the Children's University in the Rhein-Sieg district once again offers an exciting programme to participate in, research and listen to. This year's motto is "News from the World Workshop - Little Researchers on a Grand Scale!". Pupils from eight to twelve years of age or from the third to sixth grades of all types of schools can take part in the series of events at the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS).

It starts on Thursday, 14 September 2023, 17:00 to 18:30, with the lecture "Making strong films - the secret of storytelling". In the university's video and audio studio, Sabine Fricke will initiate the students into the art of cinematic storytelling. They can also try out the professional cameras and take the "Small Studio Camera Driving Licence". A second lecture on the same topic will take place on Thursday, 14 December 2023, 17:00 to 18:30.

It's all about coffee on Thursday, 16 November 2023, 17:00 to 18:30, at the lecture "On the trail of the secret of coffee roasting". Guido Krause will explain and demonstrate on a standard roasting machine how a hot drink is made from coffee beans. The young scientists roast coffee themselves and take and examine samples to determine the chemical and physical changes in the bean. They are allowed to take their self-roasted coffee home to their parents. A second lecture with the same topic will take place on Thursday, 18 January 2024, 17:00 to 18:30.

"No poverty" is one of the global goals for sustainable development. But what does poverty actually mean? Speaker Joyce Treptow, who grew up in Kenya, will take the children on a virtual journey to the country on Thursday, 14 March 2024, 17:00 to 18:30, and compare the situation with Bonn or Germany. She talks about the reasons for poverty and the great importance of education for poverty reduction. The title of the lecture is "Understanding poverty, changing perspectives: Is my world also yours?"

All events take place at the Sankt Augustin Campus of the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Grantham-Allee 20, 53757 Sankt Augustin. Those who attend at least two lectures will be invited to the awarding of the Children's University Diploma on Thursday, 18 April 2024.

Naming the owl

At the same time, there will be a naming competition for the as yet unnamed Children's University mascot, an owl. The children who attend the lectures are allowed to participate in the naming process. During the graduation ceremony on 18 April, the owl will be ceremonially "christened"; the child whose suggestion is implemented will receive a prize.

Application

The number of participants for the individual dates is limited, so prior registration is required. Anyone with questions is welcome to send them to kinderuni@h-brs.de.
