Young talents for the games industry: Newly designed English-language Master's degree programme in Game Technologies

Interactive, innovative and practical: in the newly designed Master's degree programme in Game Technologies at H-BRS, students receive comprehensive and in-depth training in the theoretical foundations and practical skills required for the development of modern computer games and interactive applications. The focus here is on the scientific and technical aspects of game development and not primarily on the artistic and creative aspects. Anyone interested in topics such as extended reality (virtual and augmented reality), deep learning and artificial intelligence in visual computing, rendering and interaction in interactive environments, serious games and motion capturing is in the right place here.
High practical component
Much emphasis is placed on practical experience in the degree programme. For example, a group project over three semesters is part of the university's curriculum. "It is a unique selling point that our students have the opportunity to work on a project for so long," says programme coordinator Professor Ernst Kruijff. Students can use this time to develop their own computer game, for example. There is also a mobility window in the third semester to gain experience abroad or to focus on individual specialisations. Exchange programmes exist with universities in Japan and Canada, for example. Numerous electives, workshops and lectures round off the curriculum.
Good career prospects
"The career prospects are excellent," says Professor André Hinkenjann, head of the programme coordinator. The games sector is becoming increasingly professionalised and is looking for specialists. On the other hand, there is also great demand for specialists in other industries and research institutions that work with the latest visualisation technologies.
Application with a letter of motivation
Those interested in the Game Technologies degree programme must have proof of English at level B2, good computer science skills and enjoy playing games and must also apply with a letter of motivation. "Above all, students must be passionate about the programme and have an interest in games technology," says Professor André Hinkenjann.
At H-BRS, students can expect modern, well-equipped laboratories and a very good relationship with the lecturers. Many teaching staff come from the field. H-BRS has had expertise in game development since 2006 - since then, more than 100 games have been developed in Bachelor's and Master's courses. There are regular game events such as Zock'n Friday in the university's own game studio, game jams, e-sports events and a dedicated student game development team.
Four-semester degree programme at the Sankt Augustin campus
The newly designed English-language Master's in Game Technologies will replace the German-language Master's in Visual Computing & Games Technology from the winter semester 2025/26. It lasts four semesters and is offered at the Sankt Augustin campus.
