H-BRS at Gamescom: Encounter with the Neanderthal avatar
The last time it was seen was around 40,000 years ago, but today's computer technology is now making it possible to meet it: Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is presenting a Neanderthal man brought to life at Gamescom in Cologne. Computer scientists at the university have created a very realistic likeness using a combination of deep learning techniques and classic computer graphics. The scientific reconstruction of a Neanderthal face served as the basis. Although the early man does not speak, he shows his modern counterpart a wide range of facial expressions.
The Department of Computer Science is presenting the avatar as an example of the application of computer game technology for scientific and cultural purposes.
H-BRS will be presenting other current projects from the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Visual Computing at stand A 015. The topic of games has long been a focal point of research and teaching. The university, which has campuses in Sankt Augustin, Rheinbach and Hennef, also has the appropriate Master's degree programmes in its programme. Students develop and test new games in their own game studio. One example of this is the adventure and puzzle game "Honu", which has been developed at the university since 2022 and which visitors to the trade fair can try out.
Artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are further key areas of research at the University of Applied Sciences. The eye-catcher from this field of research at the trade fair stand is the "Robot Arena", which was recently used at the "Night of Robots" at the university: On a tabletop, moving robots orientate themselves independently in a fantasy landscape and solve tasks in the process. Relaxation is also provided after the potentially exciting challenges: the massage chair on the H-BRS stand promises a soothing break and at the same time - thanks to VR glasses - an impressive and educational journey through the solar system.
At Gamescom, lecturers and students from all departments will provide information about studying at H-BRS. The university offers 40 Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. These are spread across the five departments of Computer Science, Economics, Applied Natural Sciences, Engineering and Communication as well as Social Policy and Social Security.
