Workshops underway in Ghana: Research and Education on Sustainable Land Management in Africa

Landwirtschaft Afrika (INTERFACES Workshops)

Tuesday 8 October 2024

Over the next two weeks the research group of the INTERFACES project meets partners and stakeholders in Ghana for two different workshops on the topic “Sustainable Land Management in Africa”.

The first workshop from 9th till 10th of October is about planning an E-learning certificate on Research and Innovation for Sustainable Land Management in Africa. The workshop aims to bring together content producers and moderators of the e-certificate to plan the moderated sessions as part of the E-Learning experience and the actual roll out of the e-certificate at University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Ghana in 2025.

The objective of the E-learning course is to provide an extracurricular qualification in Research and Innovation in Sustainable Land Management through practical content. The content will be based on the research outcomes, methods, and contributions of the four BMBF-funded regional projects and interfaces within the call "Sustainable Land Management in Sub-Saharan Africa: Improving Livelihoods through Local Research." The course is structured into six modules, covering topics such as the evolution of land governance in Africa, gender and land management, as well as research and innovation.

„This workshop represents a milestone in our planned activities for the INTERFACES project. It will define the actual implementation of the E-learning certificate at UESD, a key step in our project. Moreover, it will bring together all partners involved in this joint venture for the first time, marking a significant moment in our progress. We are looking forward to this collaboration and to implementing it next year.”

A series of sessions on “e-teaching” has been prepared in cooperation with the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) library. The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) will present the online Learning Management System for the roll out of the e-certificate in 2025.

The e-certificate is developed under INTERFACES project through a collaboration between International Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE) at H-BRS and UESD, FARA as well as West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL). During the workshop further collaboration with University of Development Studies (UDS) located in Tamale, Ghana will be explored. Representatives of all organisations are participating in the workshop.

The second workshop at 15th of October is all about improving the funding of transdisciplinary research in Afrika. Under the title “Expert workshop: Visionary ideas to transform funding of participatory and transdisciplinary research for sustainable development in Africa” the workshop aims to bundle good practices in funding transdisciplinary and participatory research and develop visionary ideas on transforming research funding.

The workshop is part of a workshop series:

  • Face-to-face expert workshop in Germany, with Germany based researchers and funders (June 2024)
  • Face-to-face expert workshop in Ghana, with Africa based researchers, science policy makers and practitioners (October 2024)
  • Online expert workshop bringing African and German actors together (planned for 2025)

A highlight of the event will be the participation of Jackie Kado, Executive Director of the Network of African Science Academy (NASAC). She will give a presentation as an input to the workshop.

Also, Eefje Aarnoudse from H-BRS, IZNE gives a presentation on “Evolution of funding practices for transdisciplinary research: German public funders”.

„It’s a unique opportunity to discuss and reflect on the way researchers based in Germany are conducting transdisciplinary research with African partners in Africa – and how this is bound by conditions set by the funders.”
