UN pass Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development

Wednesday 21 October 2015

During their 70th annual General Assembly the United Nations passed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on September 25th, succeeding the goals of the Millennium Declaration from the year 2000, which will expire later this year. Beside the eight Millennium goals which include the fight against extreme poverty, hunger and injustice, sustainable and ecological targets are especially highlighted, such as the mitigation of climate change, sustainable growth, and the preservation of ecosystems.

Allowing for more dimensions, the number of goals rose to 17 which are defined by 169 objectives to cover as many economic, social and environmental issues as possible.

The UN Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Wu Hongbo, pointed out that not only the scope of the agenda and the focus on the sustainability was worth mentioning – rather the fact that the agenda was shaped by government officials and citizens of the 193 member states and that objectives were developed from the entire world for the entire world was absolutely unique.

The agreement will enter into force as of January 1, 2016, but will not be binding for the 193 member states.

The implementation of the goals in national politics is on a voluntary basis.

IZNE included the sustainable development goals already in its strategic considerations.
