Fabian Sommer is new professor at the department IWK

Technical solutions for an intelligent and efficient energy supply based on renewable resources have long fascinated Fabian Sommer. He is convinced that a future-proof energy system can only be achieved through the consistent integration of the electricity, heating and mobility sectors. A key focus of his work to date has been the system integration of photovoltaic systems in supply structures, particularly in combination with energy storage systems. Here, he has focussed on the topics of efficiency and operating strategy.
Fabian Sommer grew up in the Rhein-Sieg district and studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He then worked for almost ten years as a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology in Kassel. After completing his doctorate, he moved back to the Cologne/Bonn region and worked in industry. He was initially involved in the development of solar home storage systems at Solarwatt Innovation GmbH in Hürth before heading up research projects for sustainable energy systems based on innovative storage systems at Eaton Industries GmbH.
In his new role, he aims to inspire students at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg with varied and motivating teaching on renewable energy systems technology. The direct application of what he has learnt in practical courses and projects is particularly important to him. For his research activities, he plans to focus on the operation of energy technology components in sustainably equipped buildings and their interfaces with external supply structures.
Fabian Sommer enjoys spending his free time with his family in the countryside or on his bike. He is interested in intercultural topics and Indian cuisine.
