Hiromu Otsubo from NAIST-Japan visits the H-BRS
Research assistant Melissa Steininger and research assistant Dr Alexander Marquardt, both from H-BRS, travelled to Japan as part of the DAAD-PPP (Project-related Personnel Exchange Programme). Here they were able to work on their project Multisensory Cues to Evoke Emotional Responses and Awe in Virtual Reality as guests of the Nara Institute for Science and Technology (NAIST).
The focus was on Melissa Steininger's user study, which explicitly examined various VR scenarios - including the exploration of a space flight, an underwater world and high mountain landscapes. The aim was to find out to what extent these VR environments have the ability to support or inspire awe. Awe is a very complex emotion. In their study, the young research team focussed on measuring biophysiological signals such as skin conductance and respiratory rate, as awe is often accompanied by physical reactions. The team hopes that these measurements will provide evidence that the user is actually experiencing awe.
In addition, the researchers took the opportunity to participate in a workshop organised by Assistant Professor Monica Perusquía-Hernández (NAIST, Assistant Professor in the CARE Lab) on the topic of "Cyber-physical Technologies for Affective Wellbeing". The workshop offers young researchers the opportunity to share their research progress and discuss possible directions for the development of hardware and software to connect the real and virtual worlds and improve the quality of human-human and human-agent communication.
As part of the exchange programme, the Institute for Visual Computing (IVC) and the Department of Computer Science at H-BRS have now welcomed student Hiromu Otsubo from Japan. Otsubo is conducting user studies in the IVC laboratories for three weeks with the aim of taking valuable results back to Japan.
The research team consists of members of the Cybernetics & Reality Engineering (CARE) Lab at NAIST with Prof Kiyoshi Kiyokawa and Assistant Professor Monica Perusquía-Hernández, while Prof Ernst Kruijff, Melissa Steininger, Dr Alexander Marquardt and student assistant Marvin Lehnort are involved from H-BRS.
