Sustainable Start-up Days: Sustainability meets Innovation
The topic of sustainability is not only highly topical in society and politics. Start-ups have long recognized that they can contribute to making the world more sustainable and future-proof with their innovative strength and new approaches.
Therefore, we would like to show you in the Sustainable Start-up Days the ways in which start-ups contribute to sustainable development and how cooperations and business models can look like and to give you the necessary methods and tools to become active yourself. From first-hand experience stories to workshops and panel discussions — a wide variety of event formats await you during the theme week, all of them free of charge and on-site.
The Sustainable Start-up Days offer you the ideal opportunity to expand your knowledge, make valuable contacts and get inspired by sustainable innovations.
Please note that the individual events will be in German.

Social enterprises aim to solve societal challenges and problems with an entrepreneurial approach and thereby bring about positive change in society.

The participants...

- develop new social business ideas with the other participants
- get a first insight into the field of social entrepreneurship
- get to know the Social Business Model Canvas and have the opportunity to try it out directly.
The workshop is suitable for all those who are enthusiastic about entrepreneurship and would like to take their first steps in the field of social start-ups. Previous experience is not necessary.
Register by 14 April to secure your spot!
If all places are booked, a waiting list will be opened. If you have booked a place but are unable to attend, please cancel your registration in good time so that we can pass on the place to others who are interested.
Wednesday, April 19: Social Design Sprint (Mini-Hackathon)
- Time: 4 to 8 pm
- Venue: THE 9TH - Workshop room
Mini hackathon in which participants learn to identify and understand a social problem and find creative solutions.
Ready for a challenge? Our Social Design Sprint is about identifying, understanding and finding creative solutions to a social problem in the shortest possible time.
The Rhein-Sieg-Kreis will present you with a real situation from the region, which you may even know from your everyday life and which needs to be improved. Before you become active yourself, we will provide you with the necessary methods to help you find creative and innovative solutions to the problem.
How it works
In just 4 hours, you will examine a social problem, identify its causes, and prioritise starting points. Based on these, you will gather different approaches to solve the problem and finally decide on a solution. Based on this, you will create a prototype and finally you will have time to pitch your idea and get feedback.
Marvin Höweler from the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis will not only present the topic at the beginning of the workshop, but will also evaluate your ideas at the end.
Refreshments in the form of drinks and finger food will be provided.

Thursday, April 20: Women start up sustainably – Testimonials from female founders (WES Circle meets H-BRS & Uni Bonn)
- Time: 4 to 6 pm
- Venue: THE 9TH - Foyer
Why start up sustainably? Two female founders share their experiences.
In our event, two inspiring female founders share their stories and insights on why they decided to start their own business and how they focus on sustainability in their work. Sign up to meet exciting women and learn their start-up stories and also network and share with other like-minded start-up enthusiasts.
Women start up sustainably
At 21%, the share of female founders among green start-ups is significantly higher than in the start-up system as a whole (Green Startup Monitor). This means that female founders more often focus on the sustainability aspect of their business model. We would like to discuss this with our speakers and of course with all participants.
We have invited two exciting female founders who stand for sustainability with their start-ups:
Lea Bockem – founder of Unverpackt Seelscheid (https://www.unverpackt-seelscheid.de/): Lea opened her own zero-waste shop in 2021. Unverpackt Seelscheid sells regional and fair organic food without product packaging in order to avoid food waste and packaging waste. Lea is convinced that everyone can do something small for themselves and that together we can make a big difference. Lea is about to complete her Bachelor's degree at the H-BRS.
Mara Dohr – founder of Schmierzeug Natural Skincare (https://www.schmierzeug.com/): In her search for the perfect hand cream without harmful ingredients, Mara, a trained chemist, took matters into her own hands and founded Schmierzeug. With her products, she not only does not want to pollute the environment, but also wants to make it better in the long term.
Mara and Lea will tell us about their start-up journeys, the challenges they faced and the lessons they learned. In the process, we will learn how their decisions to focus on sustainability have benefited their businesses and what visions they continue to pursue.
*** The event is organised as a cooperation between the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, the University of Bonn and the project Women Entrepreneurs in Science. ***
** The project Women Entrepreneurs in Science is a network for students, female employees and graduates of NRW universities. All offers are available free of charge. This offer is primarily aimed at women, but men are not excluded! **
Friday, April 21: Sustainable cooperation between established companies and start-ups - Stadtwerke Bonn and goFLUX (Talk)
- Time: 4 to 5.30 pm
- Venue: THE 9TH - Foyer
For established companies, cooperation with start-ups can be particularly target-oriented in areas related to sustainability. Start-ups are more innovative and agile than established companies and they can thus develop creative solutions for sustainable problems more quickly. Stadtwerke Bonn has recognised this and entered into a cooperation with the mobility start-up goFLUX.
At the event, Calvin Deppisch (Innovation Management, SWB) and Christian Schlüter (Business Development, goFlux) will discuss together with mobility expert Paul Bossauer (Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences), using concrete examples, how sharing products (CarSharing, BikeSharing, etc.) can change our transport system and how much emissions can be reduced by 1,000 trips. They will also discuss how start-ups can be integrated into the sustainability strategies of established companies and which criteria have to be fulfilled in order to establish a successful cooperation.
