Those who aspire to a professorship must fulfill some appointment requirements, which are described in §36 HG NRW:

In order to meet the challenges of the socio-ecological transformation, we would like to have diverse teams and, in particular, more female professors at our university. Above all, however, we are looking for team-oriented personalities who are willing to courageously develop our departments and degree programs. Formal requirements for appointment

  • Completed university studies 
  • Special aptitude for scientific work (usually demonstrated by a doctorate or special aptitude for artistic work)
  • At least five years of professional experience after graduation (including at least three years outside a university). This should include evidence of special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods.
  • Pedagogical aptitude (demonstrated, for example, by experience in teaching).

Other requirements for appointment

In addition to the formal requirements, the professional requirements from the job description must be (largely) fulfilled. Further requirements may - depending on the job description - concern social competences, research activities, publications, project experience, leadership experience, and more.

Additional must-have criteria at our university are the willingness to reflect and integrate sustainability in teaching, research and transfer. Here, a look at our university development plan is recommended. The same applies to the willingness to reflect and integrate gender and diversity aspects in teaching, research and transfer.
