Marina Ley, Chemistry with Materials Science

The versatility of the chemistry and materials science modules on offer, the helpfulness of professors and lecturers, practicals in modern laboratories and "the excellent organisation of the course" made it easy for her to complete her studies in the standard period of study. She is currently in the final phase of her Master's programme at the University of Göttingen.

Marina Ley wrote this experience report while she was still studying here.

"Hello, my name is Marina and I'm 23 years old. I started my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with Materials Science at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in the winter semester of 2011 and graduated this year (2014).

I have to say that my secondary school, Calvarienberg in Ahrweiler, prepared me excellently for my studies.

Some of the things that made studying in Rheinbach very special were the variety of chemistry and materials science modules on offer, the support and helpfulness of many professors and lecturers (who were happy to take the time to solve their students' problems), all kinds of practicals in modern laboratories (which were completed in small groups), super nice fellow students and the excellent organisation of the course, which made it very easy to graduate within the standard period of study.

In the course of my studies, I realised that I was personally fascinated by the subjects of classical chemistry (e.g. organic chemistry), which are taught on a larger scale at universities, so I decided to do my Master's degree at the Philipps University in Marburg. There I will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in organic and medicinal chemistry due to a very wide range of options.

Everyone has to decide for themselves whether studying at a (technical) college or a university is the right choice. When I look back now after my first few weeks at university, I'm very happy to have completed my Bachelor's degree at a university like Rheinbach, but I'm also looking forward to the new challenges in Marburg."

Marina Ley received the sponsorship award from the "Friends and Sponsors of Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg" for her outstanding thesis in 2014. This prize is only awarded each year to one thesis from each of the five departments.
