Diversity Thursday: Social justice

Thursday 20 February 2025

With ‘Diversity Thursday’, the diversity management team at H-BRS regularly focuses on diversity aspects and anti-discrimination issues on Thursdays. This time: Social justice

20 February is World Day of Social Justice – a day on which we are all encouraged to reflect on the urgency of a fair and just world. The United Nations proclaimed this day for the first time in 2009. In the face of growing global inequalities, which have been intensified by the financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change and inflation, there is a growing focus on the issue of social justice. But what exactly is social justice? And how can we achieve a fairer world? This Diversity Thursday, we are getting to the bottom of this question and showing how we can all contribute to creating a fairer society.

What is social justice?

There is no single definition of social justice. This complex topic is continuously debated in politics and society. Social justice refers to the idea in society that the distribution of goods and burdens within a society should be as equitably as possible, regardless of origin, gender, social status or other characteristics. The perception of what is just or unjust is subject to constant discourse.

To grasp the concept of social justice, it must be considered in relation to the existing and measurable social inequalities. These inequalities are reflected in educational opportunities, differences in wealth and income, and the risk of poverty within a society. In addition, access to healthcare, the labour market and political participation play an important role. Achieving social justice is an ongoing process that requires constant examination of the structures and mechanisms of inequality.

How can social justice be supported? Your contribution counts too!

  • Education and awareness: Specific educational programmes and awareness-raising campaigns can create consciousness of social injustices and promote respectful interaction with one another.
  • Community engagement: Supporting local projects and organisations that advocate for the rights and well-being of marginalised groups helps to promote social justice. You too can support social justice, for example by joining or supporting a voluntary organisation.
  • Empowerment: Strengthening groups and communities by providing them with the resources, skills and opportunities to stand up for their rights and make their voices heard.
  • Fair consumption and economy: Supporting companies and organisations that are committed to fair working conditions, environmental protection and social responsibility helps to promote a fair economy. You can make a difference in your everyday life by consciously considering your own consumption.
  • Political participation: Engagement in political processes that promote social justice and actively fight disadvantage is a central step towards a fairer society. One way to get involved is to join (student) committees.

Use your right to vote to actively participate in shaping our society.

Elections for the German Bundestag will take place on Sunday, 23 February 2025. Voting works! Every vote counts and helps to strengthen democratic processes and jointly tackle the social challenges facing our society. In this way, we can contribute to social justice, step by step.

What does social justice have to do with democracy?

Social justice and democracy are closely linked, since a functioning democracy is based on the idea that all citizens have equal political and social rights. Social justice ensures that not only formal rights such as the right to vote are guaranteed, but that all citizens actually have the opportunity to participate in social life – regardless of, among others, their social, economic or cultural situation. A just society helps to minimise social tensions and inequalities, which in turn strengthens democratic structures and trust in politics. At the same time, a democratic government is seen as having a responsibility to work towards achieving social justice and to take into account the needs of all citizens. Protecting minorities and listening to their voices is both part of democratic life and an important aspect of social justice.

What contribution do we make at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg?

At Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, we make a relevant contribution by offering study programmes such as Sustainable Social Policy, which deals with central issues of social policy such as poverty, educational opportunities, social systems, participation, elections and the intergenerational contract.

In addition to education, research at H-BRS also contributes to the advancement of social justice by developing practice-oriented solutions for current socio-political issues and societal and democratic challenges.

With the initiative Respekt! Time for Diversity, Time for Sustainability, we promote mutual recognition, acceptance and understanding of all individuals at H-BRS. In addition, the H-BRS has been certified as a Fairtrade University since May 2019. With our events and activities, we also raise awareness of social injustices, focus on respectful coexistence and provide practical tips for everyday life for more social justice.
