Documentary „One Word“

The screening will take place on Monday, 6 November at 6:30 pm in Lecture Hall 8 on the Campus Sankt Augustin. The documentary screening is part of the Bonn Filmfair.  Admission is free. 

Afterwards, there will be an exchange with Sarah Friedrichs (Head of Diversity Management at the Fairtrade University Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg), Birgit Dannefelser (Coordinator Fairtrade Sankt Augustin) and Susanne Töller (Climate Adaptation Manager of the City of Sankt Augustin).

The Republic of the Marshall Islands is an island nation near the equator in the vast endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. Even before the era of the Ancient Greeks, the Marshall Islands were already inhabited.

But now the greenhouse gas emissions of the industrial societies severely harm or might even destroy the ancient culture of the Marshall Islands. Because the sea is rising. Forecasts predict the uninhabitability of the islands by the year 2050.

In nine-month workshops, filmmaker Viviana and Mark Uriona (camera) made the film together with many Mashalles, which resulted in a lively and current documentary about the effects of climate change. The documentary film trusts that the residents are the only experts in their country and lets them talk about their personal experiences, about ecology, biology, agriculture and fishing or as professors, artists and representatives. stand in front of the camera inside administrations.

“One word” is “Iakwe” in the Marshallese language and means: “You are beautiful like the rainbow”. The word has many meanings, for example “Hello” or “I love you” and includes all people in mutual respect and responsibility. Because what is happening in the Marshall Islands affects all of us – everywhere in the world.
