Burak Yılmaz
With an insight into the culture of remembrance and German history, Burak Yılmaz addresses the background, causes and effects of anti-Semitism and racism. Yılmaz makes his explanations vivid by bringing in numerous examples from his varied work and personal experience. He sensitizes the audience to these social challenges and offers valuable impulses for self-reflection as well as practical tips on how to (re)act without discrimination.

Our speaker
Burak Yılmaz lives as a freelance educator, author and podcaster in his native city of Duisburg. Born in 1987 to Turkish-Kurdish parents, he grew up in the Obermarxloh district of Duisburg. There he attended a Catholic secondary school and at the same time learned at a Koran school. He then studied German and English at the University of Bochum and qualified as a theater teacher. Yılmaz is the initiator of the project “Young Muslims in Auschwitz” and leads the theater group “Die Blickwandler”. In 2021, he published his book “Ehrensache: Kämpfen gegen Judenhass” with Suhrkamp Verlag. In 2018, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment against racism and anti-Semitism. In November 2024, he also received the Robert Goldmann Scholarship from the city of Reinheim.
The guest lecture takes place as part of the course Introduction to Media and Communication Studies by Prof. Dr. Derya Gür-Şeker in the Bachelor's degree program Sustainable Social Policy.
In the lecture, students build up basic knowledge of communication, media and the public sphere. The lecture is an inspiring addition to the course content, as it addresses the social impact of anti-Semitism and racism - an area that is heavily influenced by media coverage. Here it becomes particularly clear how the portrayal of marginalized groups and the communication of stereotypes in the media can influence public opinion and the social climate.
