Study and family
The university has support measures available, such as individual study plans, alternative study substitutes, company kindergarten places, vacation care, parent-child workrooms, vacation semesters, support for personal development, support for time and stress management, scholarships, emergency assistance funds.
However, if life gets out of control during certain phases of your studies and you recognize your own limits because you feel overwhelmed and left alone with the entire situation, it makes sense to seek professional help. The exchange with a neutral person can be very helpful here.
Many students without children are also overwhelmed by the demands of their studies and sometimes have serious problems.
The double burden of having a child makes student parents even more vulnerable. Those who are put under too much pressure in their studies can be plagued by general fears of failure, depression, exhaustion, learning difficulties, etc.
The HELP advice center advises and accompanies those seeking advice on various personal problems as well as on topics concerning the compatibility of studies and family. The counseling is confidential and aimed at finding individual solutions together, always taking into account the specific life and family situation.
Even if the difficulties in the topic of reconciling studies and family are often in the foreground - the experiences in counseling with student parents also show at the same time the joy of having a child and one's own positive personality development through the (new) task.
In addition to the personal conversations, the counseling center is again planning parent meetings for 2023 for students who are pregnant or already have children. The goal of the meetings is to exchange ideas with other students in the same situation, to provide mutual support, and to build a network among students with families.
In addition, the HELP advice center advises and supports students with support problems during exam periods.
The Maternity Protection Act (as of January 1, 2018) stipulates that female students can report a pregnancy to the university. In this case, please contact the Student Secretariat.
