Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg top in terms of equality

Friday 30 June 2017

Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is one of the top universities in Germany for gender equality. In this year's CEWS ranking according to gender equality aspects, which is based on quantitative data from 2015, it was placed in ranking group 2 together with 17 other universities. The university has improved by two places compared to the previous ranking. In addition to the universities, a total of 138 universities of applied sciences were analysed; the ranking places them in a total of nine ranking groups based on the results of the indicators.

"I am delighted that the university's intensive gender equality efforts are reflected in the good figures in the nationwide gender equality ranking. This shows that family-friendliness and equality are part of everyday life at H-BRS," commented Annegret Schnell, equal opportunity commissioner at H-BRS, on the CEWS ranking, "the diverse catalogue of measures taken in recent years to promote young female academics is bearing fruit."

Among the measures, the expansion as a family-friendly university, the awarding of doctoral scholarships for young female academics and the efforts to specifically address women and encourage them to apply for professorships should be emphasised. In this context, the seminar series "Green light for female professors" should be mentioned as well as the joint project with Bochum University "Female professors, where are you?" with information and a film on the profession of FH professorship (.professorin-werden.de).

The CEWS ranking

The Competence Centre for Women in Science and Research (CEWS) evaluates the equal participation of women and men in studies, further academic qualifications and staff at universities. The overall ranking assesses performance in the areas of doctorates, post-doctoral academic qualifications, academic staff and professors. The change in the proportion of women in professorships and academic staff between 2010 and 2015 is also taken into account.

Since its development in 2003, the CEWS ranking has established itself as a component of quality assurance for gender equality at universities. The aim is to continuously compare the performance of universities in the area of gender equality with the help of quantitative indicators. It has established itself as a component of quality assurance for equality at universities and is carried out every two years using figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

The comparative view of performance with regard to equal opportunities serves as a basis for introducing or continuing effective measures to further improve the situation of women in science, academia and research.
