Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is "Best Engineering Centre"

Wednesday 6 May 2015

The representatives of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism (EMT) at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg were delighted yesterday (5 May 2015) in Berlin. VDMA President Dr Reinhold Festge had just announced the department as the winner of the "Best Engineering House 2015" competition. 100.000 euros is the prize for the Sankt Augustin faculty's good ideas to improve teaching for better student success.

Prof. Dr Iris Groß, Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Continuing Education and herself a member of the EMT department, says: "The department received the award because engineering students are placed at the centre of teaching. Thanks to the high proportion of projects in the so-called "4+1+4+1+4+1" model, in which four weeks of teaching are followed by a week of project work, students find out early on what they are learning for." The discussion about good teaching has always been very important to the department.

The university-wide Pro-MINT-us project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, gave teaching a major boost. Many ideas for improving teaching, which were brought together in the VDMA request, were developed as part of this project and could be implemented with Pro-MINT-us funding.

The winning concept impressed the jury with its strong practical orientation and the concrete involvement of the students. In addition to technical knowledge, the students also acquired skills in project management and presentation techniques. The team from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg came out on top against five other finalists.
