Data Management Plan

Dealing with digital research data brings new challenges - a data management plan can help.

A data management plan (DMP) describes the structured handling of the research data generated in the course of a project. It contains information about the project, the responsibilities and which technical standards/guidelines have to be met. In addition, information is given about the amount of data, file formats, archiving and availability of the data. If kept up-to-date, the DMP facilitates the joint use and re-use of project data and reduces the risk of data loss.

More and more research funders demand or welcome a DMP. Here you can find a short overview:

  • EU (Horizon2020): Mandatory with participation in the Open Research Data Pilot. Otherwise there is a general encouragement for DMPs. To be submitted within the first six months after project start.
  • BMBF: DMPs are - depending on the programme - mandatory with application.
  • DFG: The DFG provides mandatory information on the handling of research data in proposals for individual and collaborative projects. Here you can find a checklist for an appropriate handling of research data in DFG projects.

Useful information and sample data management plans can be found at DMPonline. Information on the requirements of research funders can be found on the HU Berlin website.
