Keymanagement

Motivation

The home automation industry has greatly increased in recent years, here advertise many manufacturers in terms of security with its strong encryption algorithms. In most cases, this is an algorithm of the Advanced Encryption Standard family, but this type of algorithm need a symmetric key. This raises the question how are these keys generated, stored and exchanged.

Objective

It is the goal of this project to analyze and summarize the main key management strategy of a few chosen manufactures. Based on the knowledge gained will be then developed a new key management concept and implemented prototypically.

Methods

To analyze the selected manufacturer protocols, in addition to the specifications other research are used.

Results

A first paper summarizes the security concepts of ZigBee, Z-Wave and EnOcean. Here it was found that all examined manufacturers build their security systems on a pre-shared key.
