Diversity at H-BRS

Facts not prejudices: A strong signal against racism as part of the International Weeks Against Racism at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg

Wednesday 19 March 2025

On Tuesday, 18 March 2025, the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) set an example in the fight against racism, to mark the International Day Against Racism on 21 March.
Internationale Wochen gegen Rassismus 2025

As part of the International Weeks Against Racism, numerous members of the university gathered at the stand of the initiative ‘Respekt! Zeit für Vielfalt, Zeit für Nachhaltigkeit’ to take part in the interactive activity ‘Facts instead of prejudice’. Its aim was to counter false information about racism and discrimination and prejudice with facts, and to send a strong signal in favour of diversity and respect.

That's why we opened the ‘wall of facts’ at the H-BRS, which addressed widespread misconceptions about racism and discrimination and countered them with verified facts and scientific studies. This campaign not only imparted knowledge, but also invited people to exchange views on how to deal with racism in our society.

„Each of us consciously or unconsciously holds stereotypes – what is important is to consciously deal with them and be willing to change.”

Facts and insights from the campaign

During the campaign, for example, the following facts and insights about racism and discrimination were pointed out:

Racism is widespread in the centre of society, not just among extreme fringe groups. A study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation showed that racist attitudes are also widespread in the centre of society. Many people tend to express racist views without defining themselves as extreme right-wing or violent.

Amnesty International says: ‘Racism has been inscribed in our society for generations. It is rooted in colonialism and National Socialism. And politics, mass media or language use perpetuate racist mechanisms, prejudices and stereotypes. All of this is expressed in our actions in many ways.’

Since 2021, so for more than four years now, the Diversity Management Team has been in place at the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg.

With its collective expertise, the team's activities provide impetus, create visibility and facilitate space for exchange and encounters. In addition, the Diversity Management Team is a contact point in case of discrimination at the H-BRS.
