H-BRS students honoured with Deutschlandstipendium
The stage of the largest lecture theatre at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences was almost too small for the obligatory group photo after all the sponsors and scholarship holders of the 2024/25 intake had gathered there. In a festive setting in the Auditorium Maximum in Sankt Augustin, University President Marion Halfmann had previously personally congratulated 94 students from all departments on receiving the Deutschlandstipendium. With the Deutschlandstipendium, students receive a monthly grant of 300 euros for one year. This year, 33 companies and foundations are involved as sponsors in the university's education fund.
University President Marion Halfmann described the Deutschlandstipendium as a key instrument in the training of skilled workers: ‘We are competing for the best minds internationally and the Deutschlandstipendium helps to make training in Germany more attractive. In view of the huge shortage of skilled labour, particularly in the STEM fields, we as a university greatly appreciate the fact that companies are working with us to help young talent gain qualifications.’ With regard to the scholarship holders, she added: ‘I hope that you can utilise the freedom that the Deutschlandstipendium offers you. Above all, take advantage of the contacts with companies and be ambassadors for our university in the best sense of the word.’
Long-standing scholarship providers and new additions
In addition to long-standing partners, five newcomers have decided to support the Deutschlandstipendium programme this year. HARIBO is funding two scholarships. The companies Ellectronica and Seekamp are each supporting students specialising in electrical engineering with a scholarship. For the first time, a graduate and former scholarship holder of the university has joined the programme as a sponsor who wants to give back the support he has received. Another newcomer is the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences' own study foundation, which is funding seven scholarships independent of subject area from the foundation's income.
Since the Deutschlandstipendium programme was introduced, a total of 1368 students at H-BRS have benefited from it. In this programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), companies and foundations each pay half of the funding amount. The federal government contributes the other 50 per cent. In addition to the monthly funding, students often benefit from close contact with their scholarship provider. In companies, they gain an insight into everyday working life and can also take part in internal training programmes such as workshops.
Among the sponsors at H-BRS are long-standing Deutschlandstipendien partners such as the SER Group and the Ließem Foundation. The WiCAM Foundation has been sponsoring ten Deutschlandstipendien for two years, making it one of the premium sponsors in the scholarship programme.
‘An extraordinary concept’
‘The Deutschlandstipendium is an extraordinary concept that we believe deserves much more attention,’ said Ralf Deininger, member of the WiCAM Foundation's Board of Directors. ‘It creates a bridge between ambitious students and the support they need to realise their dreams.’ As a premium sponsor, the foundation finances German scholarships in the STEM field.
In the panel discussion, Konstantin Stein, Master's student of computer science and scholarship holder of the Sankt Augustin-based software company adiutaByte, said that the scholarship had enabled him to further expand his voluntary work, for example in sport and in the church community.
Maryam El Majjaoui, who is studying computer science in her third semester, emphasised that the scholarship appreciates ‘performance and commitment regardless of origin and external characteristics’. The bachelor's student receives her scholarship from the Ließem Foundation.
Most of the scholarships in the new funding period will go to the departments of Computer Science (27) and Economics (26). In the Faculty of Engineering and Communication, 24 students will benefit from the support, ten in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and seven in the Faculty of Social Policy and Social Security.
