Dr Milena Kriegsmann-Rabe has been honoured by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for her research into resilience. The researcher is currently investigating social innovations in the field of art and culture in rural areas as part of the SIKUL project at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS). The Karl Arnold Prize 2024, endowed with 10,000 euros, was presented on Wednesday, 9 October, at the Leo Brandt event in Düsseldorf.

In her research work, the cultural anthropologist looked at the topic of resilience from the perspective of medicine, the life sciences and cultural studies. Through this interdisciplinary discourse, she has succeeded in making a significant contribution to resilience research that is far above average, according to the selection committee. The researcher completed her cumulative dissertation at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bonn with magna cum laude (1.0).

In addition to her theoretical work on the concept of resilience, Kriegsmann-Rabe examined the situation of migrant carers working in round-the-clock care in Germany in her doctoral thesis - a topic that continues to be close to her heart: "Many elderly people in need of care in Germany - the exact number is unclear - are looked after by Eastern European carers who suffer from the mostly precarious working conditions. I would now like to use the prize money to help improve the situation of these people," says Kriegsmann-Rabe.

Every year, the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts honours outstanding research work or artistic achievement by young researchers and artists with the Karl Arnold Prize. This year, the award was presented on the key topic of "Resilience".

The SIKUL research project at H-BRS

In the SIKUL research project (Social innovations in art and culture as a factor for resilience and cultural participation in structurally weak rural areas: a case study approach to research impact mechanisms), the team is investigating how social innovations in the field of art and culture arise in rural areas and how they succeed. Social innovations include, for example, art offerings for people with special needs, theatre workshops for school classes or a cinema for the blind. SIKUL is a project of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Innovation and SMEs (CENTIM) at H-BRS.
