Visa and Entry Requirement

Life in Germany may not be as expensive as in other European countries. However, the amount of money you will need ultimately depends on your lifestyle and where you would like to live. In order to get a visa, most German embassies (or consulates) often require proof a minimum amount. As of January 1, 2023, and continuing into 2024, this means having approximately €934 per month or €11,208 for the entire year. Each country’s embassy has different requirements. By far the most important insurance policy for international students is health insurance. Without it students cannot enroll at the university, and visiting scientists cannot sign their work contract. Under existing international insurance agreements, residents of countries from the European Union and the European Economic Area may be able to use insurance from their home country while in Germany. However, if you don’t have insurance or your insurance policy is not valid in Germany, then insurance cover must be obtained either directly before or after arriving in Germany.
