Schoolgirl research year: discover-try-create

On August 29, 2024, the starting signal was given for the new STEM year for schoolgirls at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Rhein-Sieg district education office. This year, 42 committed schoolgirls from 11 different schools in the region are taking part in the innovative program “Female Pupils' Research Year: discover-try-create”. The STEM year offers young women the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

The aim of the project is to encourage schoolgirls' interest in STEM subjects while giving them practical insights into the wide range of career opportunities in these fields. Throughout the 2024/25 school year, the participants will explore and expand their skills and interests in various events and workshops. Supported by experts as well as practical exercises and projects, they will gain valuable experience that could enrich their school careers and shape their professional orientation.

At the opening event, the focus was on getting to know each other. The students not only had the opportunity to exchange ideas with each other, but also to gain their first impressions of the university and its wide range of opportunities. The insight into the university's various state-of-the-art laboratories was particularly exciting. The participants visited the robotics laboratory, where they were able to experience the fascinating world of robotics up close, the Smart Factory, which offered insights into the future of industrial production, and the machine hall, where they saw the large machines in action. Another highlight was the TV studio, where they were able to take a look behind the scenes of media production. These introductions gave the students a first impression of the practical activities on offer at the university and aroused their curiosity about the upcoming projects and workshops in the STEM year.

The STEM Year at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Rhein-Sieg district has established itself as a successful program over the past year. The organizers are confident that this year's group of schoolgirls will also be encouraged to see their professional future in these areas through the extensive and practical engagement with STEM topics.

Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is looking forward to an exciting and successful STEM year 2024/25 and to supporting the next generation of female scientists and engineers on their path.
