Can social protection programmes aid beneficiaries beyond alleviating immediate poverty and help them build resilience against negative environmental shocks? In his research, Nicolas investigates if and how cash transfers unfold such additional protective potential by empowering beneficiary farmers cope with and adapt to extreme heat events, using the example of Malawi‘s national cash transfer programme. This is especially relevant for subsistence farmers whose direct survival may crucially hinge upon their ability to shield their harvests from environmental hazards.

Nicolas Klas is a PhD candidate at University Göttingen with experience in research and evaluation. Among others, he worked in the Africa/Middle-East department of Misereor, and the team for Health, Education and Social Protection in Southern Africa and evaluations department at KfW development bank.
