Department of Computer Science
Prof. Dr Nico Hochgeschwender says goodbye
Prof. Dr. Nico Hochgeschwender started as a research assistant at the H-BRS in the Department of Computer Science from 2009 to 2017, where he conducted research in the field of Robotics, Autonomous Systems, AI and Security and received his PhD in 2017. In October 2019, he was appointed professor in the field of robotics, autonomous systems and their safety.
The fact that the passionate rugby player and mountaineer brings a lot of energy and strategic thinking is evident in many areas. With the redesign of the laboratories and the associated robotic platforms, Hochgeschwender created an improved opportunity for structured research and networked work, which he used for his research projects, such as METRICS, SafeMUV and SESAME, and the redesign of courses. Hochgeschwender supervised several cooperative doctorates, some of them still ongoing, e.g. with the University of Luxembourg, the Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Bielefeld, KU Leuven, and intensified cooperation with these universities in the field of teaching, e.g. through summer schools and special courses.
With the founding of the Institute for AI and Autonomous Systems (A2S), Hochgeschwender, as the founding father, laid a decisive milestone for future research activities in the field of AI and robotics at the H-BRS. He handed over the reins to Prof. Dr. Teena Hassan on 01.09.2023.
At the same time, he handed over his position as Director of the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it), which he had filled since November 2022, to the Dean of the Department of Computer Science, Prof. Dr. Sascha Alda.
We wish him every success in his new role as Professor of "Software Engineering for Cognitive Robotics and Systems" at the University of Bremen.
