Stem cell research: H-BRS again welcomes RISE scholarship holder
Together with PhD student Sarah Shoushrah, she is investigating tiny signals in the human body that help certain cells become bone cells. With the hands-on experience she has gained, she hopes to pursue graduate studies in stem cells and therapeutics.
"The research internship allows me to extend my academic journey beyond my home country of China and gain hands-on experience at a research facility outside the UK. I am very excited to be able to work with experienced researchers here in Rheinbach and learn a lot from them," says Sun.
The student prevailed over 30 applicants from the USA, Canada and Great Britain who had applied for a position in Professor Tobiasch's stem cell laboratory. Tobiasch is pleased that more and more international students decide to complete their RISE scholarship at the H-BRS: "The high number of applicants shows that we as a university of applied sciences conduct research at a high level and that this is also recognized internationally. And we also benefit from the exchange with young, motivated students like Yanran Sun," says Tobiasch.
Background
RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) is a DAAD program that arranges research internships for North American, British, and Irish undergraduate students at universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. Although it is very unusual for RISE interns to come to a university of applied sciences, H-BRS has been successfully recruiting scholarships from the DAAD's RISE Germany program since 2011. Professor Edda Tobiasch's lab has hosted 18 RISE students so far.
