The research team led by Professor Edda Tobiasch from the Department of Natural Sciences has once again hosted a RISE scholarship holder in their laboratory. Saoirse Hanbury from the University of Massachusetts in the USA supported PhD student Sarah Shoushrah in her work for two months.

In the process, she gained her first experience in the field of stem cell research. Hanbury is in her third semester in the USA studying biochemistry and molecular biology as well as neuroscience. After graduation, she would like to start studying medicine. For the student, the research internship at the H-BRS was the perfect complement to her scientific education.

"As a prospective medical student, I have a great interest in research on tissue regeneration for the future treatment of patients. During the internship, I was able to deepen my knowledge of laboratory work. I was also able to learn about stem cell research in a career-oriented and professional environment," says Hanbury.

Professor Edda Tobiasch is pleased that more and more international students are choosing to complete their RISE scholarship at the university: "It is expected that the universities of applied sciences (HAW) in North Rhine-Westphalia will soon receive the independent right to award doctorates via the NRW doctoral college. Particularly in view of this development, the interest of students shows that research is taking place at HAWs that exists in an international context."

Background

RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) is a DAAD programme that arranges research internships for North American, British and Irish Bachelor students at universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. Although it is very unusual for RISE interns to come to a university of applied sciences, the H-BRS has been successfully recruiting scholarships from the DAAD's RISE Germany programme since 2011. Professor Edda Tobiasch's lab has hosted 17 RISE students so far.
