Are computers creative? No, but they can quickly produce a multitude of possible solutions, says Dr Alexander Hagg. A human then decides how suitable these are. In his recently completed doctorate, Hagg dealt with co-creative processes between humans and machines.

In his dissertation, Alexander Hagg attempts to enable divergent thinking, intuition and reflection with the help of artificial intelligence. In co-creative processes, a machine proposes solutions for engineering optimisation problems. The human selects and feeds the machine with new, resulting ideas. In this way, the machine learns the preferences of the human. The dissertation titled "Hierarchical Surrogate Modeling for Illumination Algorithms" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Alexander Asteroth. The cooperating university was the Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands (Prof. Dr. Thomas Bäck). Alexander Hagg received a scholarship of the department of computer science for his doctoral studies in 2017.

So what's next?  Currently, Alexander Hagg is still employed at H-BRS. He is now working in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Journalism in a post-doctoral position, continuing in his field of research, finding broader applications and passing on his knowledge to students in courses and lectures.
