Double success at the AFCEA Study Awards 2019
Padmaja Vivek Kulkarni (Supervisor Prof. Dr. Paul Plöger Department of Computer Science and Prof. Dr. Maren Bennewitz, University of Bonn) received a third prize for her master thesis "Anthropomorphic motion mapping under constraints for direct and intuitive control of a dual-arm manipulator". The thesis studies and realizes an intuitive motion mapping between a human operator and a bi-manual robot system (bmR). For the first time, the successful use of a control element for the seamless transition between autonomy and teleoperative influence is shown. The result is an intuitive user interface that enables bi-manual, semi-autonomous teleoperations.
Priyanka Vokuda, also from the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (supervisor Prof. Dr. Paul Plöger and Prof. Dr. Ralf Thiele, both Department of Computer Science), received another third prize. Her master thesis "Interactive Object Detection" shows a promising alternative solution for object recognition, which is also feasible for medium-sized companies, without the need for enormous amounts of data, which are currently only available to large IT companies. The "Active Learning" (AL) method, which is applied to medical image data sets, is analysed, implemented and evaluated. An expert is successively presented with new images for initial evaluation or yes/no classification and the system is trained in a loop.
We congratulate both award winners on this success!
