At the National Institutes of Health
Drs. Dirk Reith and Karl Kirschner visited the groups of Drs. Bernhard Brooks and Richard Pastor at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Washington, D.C. on March 20th and 21st. Over the last three months, H-BRS's graduate student Andreas Krämer has been conducting computational chemistry research at NIH, and has subsequently been offered the choice between two postdoctoral positions. This opportunity arose from a conversation between Kirschner and Dr. Frank Pickard that occurred at an American Chemical Society meeting last year in San Diego. Pickard, who is helping to supervise Krämer's research within Brooks' group, is a former student of Kirschner (Hamilton College, USA) and together have previously coauthored three publications that investigates molecular behavior using quantum mechanics calculations.
Both Reith and Kirschner gave separate presentation while at NIH, covering their joint research in force-field development and their application in modeling molecular systems. Their talks were entitled, "Force-field development methods for atomistic and mesoscopic models of soft matter systems" and "Development and use of a molecular database for optimizing force fields." After two day of discussing research, a collaboration between the groups has been formally established with the initial goal of coauthoring at least one manuscript based on the research that Krämer has conducted while at NIH.
