State of NRW extends funding for the Cyber Campus NRW

Campus Sankt Augustin H-BRS

Monday 22 January 2024

Good news for the Cyber Campus NRW (CCNRW): The state of NRW has pledged funding for the joint project currently being run by Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) and Hochschule Niederrhein. In the pilot phase from 2020 to 2023, the establishment of the CCNRW was supported with around six million euros. The Ministry of Culture and Science of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has now decided to continue funding the Cyber Campus NRW. A total of 5.5 million euros will flow to the two universities in 2024 and 2025. H-BRS will receive 1.375 million euros per year.

Minister Ina Brandes: "We have known at least since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine: Artificial intelligence and cyber security are the big topics of the future that will affect everyone's lives. At the Cyber Campus NRW, we are therefore training students to become qualified specialists for industry and the public sector. They will help us to recognise hacker attacks, prevent them at an early stage and ensure greater security on the Internet. The Cyber Campus NRW thus contributes significantly to the business location and prosperity in our country."

Ihne: We are pleased about the confidence of the state government

"We are delighted that the state government has placed its trust in us by continuing to fund the Cyber Campus NRW in Sankt Augustin and Mönchengladbach," says H-BRS President Hartmut Ihne. "This shows that the Cyber Campus NRW is a success and encourages us in our work." The frequency of cyberattacks has increased significantly, says Sascha Alda, Dean of the Department of Computer Science. "Teaching basic procedures for securing IT systems against cyberattacks is an important part of the curricula of our Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Cyber Security & Privacy. This enables us to train future experts in the field of cyber security," says Alda.

Three-year pilot phase completed

The Cyber Campus NRW received around six million euros in funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia during the three-year pilot phase, which began in 2020. Following the first graduates of the campus, further cyber security specialists can now be trained. They will then be able to recognise hacker attacks at an early stage or fight cybercrime, for example.

Degree programmes Cyber Security & Privacy in Sankt Augustin

The CCNRW is an association of the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg and Hochschule Niederrhein. The Sankt Augustin Campus of the H-BRS offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Cyber Security & Privacy, in which more than 300 students are enrolled. The Mönchengladbach campus of Hochschule Niederrhein offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Cyber Security Management. The Digital Forensics (Bachelor) degree programme is run jointly by the two universities.
