Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) has once again been awarded the title of Fairtrade University by Fairtrade Germany and will now carry the title for another two years. For a successful application, the universities must demonstrate their commitment to fair trade based on five criteria. These include the establishment of a steering group that offers fair trade activities and events on campus. In addition, fair trade products must be offered in campus catering as well as at meetings and official events.

"I am very pleased that we have once again been awarded the distinction of Fairtrade University," says University President Hartmut Ihne. "As a university, we are clearly committed to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and want to be a forward-looking actor in this regard. Our commitment to fair trade and sustainable business practices plays an important part in this."

At the H-BRS, the Diversity Management Team oversees the Fairtrade activities. The H-BRS initiative "Respect! Time for Diversity, Time for Sustainability" organises fair trade and sustainability activities throughout the year. This year, these included information events dealing with food sharing and avoiding food waste. The Fairtrade Germany association gave a presentation on how fair trade helps to reduce CO2 emissions and counteract the consequences of the climate crisis.

"The award underlines the importance of the commitment to fair trade and sustainability. We want to actively contribute to the creation of a fairer and more sustainable world and continue to encourage university members to get involved. Because each and every individual can make a contribution to promote fair trade," says Sarah Friedrichs, Head of Diversity Management at H-BRS.
