In the fifth lecture of the lecture series on technology and environmental ethics, Wiebke Loosen from the Leibniz Institute for Media Research talks about the entry of so-called communicative AI into the news cycle. Target group analysis to increase reach on the one hand and fear of job losses on the other. The journalism researcher will explore the advantages and disadvantages in her lecture on May 23.

On May 23, Prof.'in Dr. Wiebke Loosen, Senior Researcher for Journalism Research at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research│Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI), will be a guest at the TUE lecture series at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg.

The title of her lecture is "Journalism made (artificially) intelligent? On the entry of "communicative AI" into the news cycle". In her presentation, she will focus on the increasing use of AI-based technologies and tools that affect the entire process of creating journalistic statements as well as the distribution and use of journalistic content: AI tools can support journalists in production. For example, in sifting through data volumes, analyzing target groups and audience behavior, but also in translating texts to reach a wider audience. Nevertheless, AI also has disadvantages. The use of communicative AI can promote manipulation and disinformation and thus mistrust of public communication. There is also a fear of job loss. In 2023, the Bild newspaper laid off 200 employees to make room for AI.

Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen is a senior researcher for journalism research at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research│Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) and a professor at the University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on the transformation of journalism in a changing media environment, the journalism/audience relationship and the datafication and automation of communication.

In the summer semester 2024, artificial intelligence will be the focus of the lecture series on technology and environmental ethics at H-BRS. AI is now part of our lives, is changing our work and is developing rapidly. Nine experts will give lectures on AI in various scientific disciplines and professions and then discuss opportunities, risks and ethical issues with students and the audience.
